NEW DELHI, 5 January 2011 — This is the Ford EcoSport, a Ford Fiesta-based SUV that has been revealed ahead of its motor show debut at the India Auto Expo 2012 in New Delhi tomorrow. Expanding its relentless push into the heart of Asia’s car market, Ford introduces the all-new Ford EcoSport. It is the latest global Ford to be built under the ‘One Ford’ policy. The new compact SUV will further augment Ford’s offering in India, as well as in many other markets across the globe.

Created as the latest One Ford global product, the EcoSport will be a key model in expanding Ford’s presence in major worldwide growth markets, including India, Brazil and the Asean markets. The EcoSport is the first model to be developed at Camacari, Brazil in South America at one of Ford’s eight global product development centres in conjunction with teams from Asia, Europe and North America to meet the needs of markets across the globe.

The all-new Ford EcoSport was designed to combine best-in-class design, technology, quality and safety aimed at attracting a new generation of consumers in different global markets. The Ford EcoSport will be one of the first Fords to get the firm’s new turbocharged three-cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. The version of this engine in the EcoSport produces 118bhp and 125lb ft of torque.

The new EcoSport was developed on Ford’s new global B-segment platform, which will be the basis for an array of new small-car products from Ford in the coming years. The five-door EcoSport gets chunky, technical styling, and a very space-efficient interior. A large trapezoidal front grille dominates the front-end, while the front headlights are slimmer and more technical than on the Fiesta, drawing inspiration from the Ford Evos concept from Frankfurt.

The lower front bumper and side sills get cladding, while there are also muscular wheel arches and a fixed spare wheel at the back to further emphasise its off-road intentions. The roof gets chrome rails and the rear side windows has the familiar Ford upwards kink in the window line.

In India, the new EcoSport will be produced in the integrated Chennai factory which has been transformed with an annual production capacity of 200,000 units and is now positioned as a Ford regional centre of excellence for compact-car engineering and production. Ford EcoSport models will be also produced at the plant for export to international markets.

The New Delhi launch for the EcoSport is significant, as it will be the first market to get the new Ford. The Auto Expo is also growing in significance itself, with Ford keen to launch big models there again in the future. Jaguar Land Rover also pulled out of Detroit this year to solely focus on the New Delhi show.

Ford has also confirmed sales for South America, China, North America and Europe. Brazil previously sold a Ford Fusion-based SUV badged EcoSport, a name which will be used in all global markets.
